BE AWARE IF NOT BEWARE
Can you recall putting on that cute smile of yours and secretly posing your best, just to get a new Facebook display picture? And, do you remember calling out to your photographer friend, at one of your friends’ birthday party, and asking him “Hey! Take a good picture! I want to set it up as my display picture!”? Ever wondered in those moments that posing out to a picture could be your worst mistake?
Last week, I remember asking a friend as to why had she removed her display picture and cover picture. The answer I got from her was a never-heard-before answer. “I’m afraid I’m being stalked,” replied my friend.
CYBER HARASSMENT & CYBER STALKING
Cyber stalking is a crime in which the attacker harasses a victim using electronic communication, such as e-mail or instant messaging (IM), or messages posted to a Web site or a discussion group.
Cyber Stalking has costed us more than what we can ever think of. Many times have I come across cases of rape attempts, kidnapping, threatening…all initiated through a simple Display Picture on Facebook, or a picture on Instagram account etc. You may ask how? Or why?
Well we are all aware of cases of cyber bullying where naked pictures of girls are posted on specific fake accounts to bully them and harass them in any way possible. Cyber Stalking is almost the same, just a lot more dangerous.
It has all started from a normal person putting up a Profile Picture. Then him getting a friend or a follow request. And then when he accepts it, his information is accessed by the person on the other side, with this innocent person knowing. After that, it’s all pretty easy for these stalkers.
Statistics
According to research done by University Police Department in collaboration with IT@Sam, following statistics have been observed:
- 6.6 million people are stalked per year only in US
- 30% stalkers are female; 40% are males
- 60% victims are females; 40% are males
- 30% of harassment began on Facebook
- 53% of the victims had prior relationship with the harasser/stalker
- 15% of the harassers were online acquaintances; 15% were people from work
Effects of Cyber Harassment and Cyber Stalking
- Cyber harassment has led to girls being ridiculed.
- Cyber harassment cases that touch the extremes have led to severe depressions, especially in women.
- Cyber stalking has led to many kids and women being kidnapped.
- Cyber stalking leads to extreme fears, jumping over the shadows, mental illness for the victims
- Many victims have had to go to rehabs due to these fears and illnesses.
